Why This Tour Exists

You have walked past 20+ murals in downtown Flagstaff without knowing who painted them, why they exist, or what they mean. A 4,500-square-foot painting stretches across the side of the Orpheum Theatre and most people have never looked up.

The difference between walking past a mural and walking through a mural tour is the same difference between hearing a song and knowing who wrote it, why they wrote it, and what it cost them. The stories change the art. The art changes the city. The city, it turns out, has been trying to tell you something for decades.

Your guide Jamie knows every artist, every story, and every hidden detail: the 500 donors who funded the Orpheum mural, the Dine artist who painted water as life, the house painter who became Sherwin-Williams' favorite muralist, the physician who has spent 27 years on the Navajo Reservation and makes art between shifts.

This is the only guided mural tour in Flagstaff.

140 years of paint on brick

This town has been writing on its walls since the 1880s

Most people walk past a mural, say "that's nice," and keep going. Then someone tells them the wall used to advertise flour, that the artist painted a neighbor into the third panel, and that hundreds of locals paid for the paint. Suddenly it's not a wall. It's the town, talking.

1880s

Ghost signs

Painted ads for businesses that died a century ago, still holding on above the modern storefronts.

1940s

Babbitt's glass wall art

Mid-century advertising craft from the family that built half the town.

Today

The new walls

Sky Black, Joe Sorren, Lindsey DeStefano and a community that funds its own gallery, one wall at a time.
