The Flagstaff Portal + Learning to Fly

by Sean Griffin and Sky Black

111-115 W. Birch
The Flagstaff Portal + Learning to Fly by Sean Griffin, Sky Black, a mural in Historic Downtown Flagstaff

The History

West Birch Avenue marks the western edge of the tour route, near the Dark Sky Brewery area. The buildings at 111 to 115 sit at the transition between downtown's commercial core and the residential neighborhoods beyond.

The Art

Sean Griffin's Flagstaff Portal invites viewers to step through, creating an Alice in Wonderland feel on an otherwise ordinary wall. Griffin's portal concept ties this piece to his work at Dark Sky Brewery, creating a visual thread through the final stretch of the tour.

Sky Black returns here with Learning to Fly, painted over five weeks using only brush and palette (no spray paint). This bookend is intentional: the tour opens with Sky Black's Sound of Flight at the Orpheum and closes with Learning to Fly at Birch Avenue. Both compositions are vibrant, bird-filled, and full of wonder.
