Stop #08 🚲
by Lyle Motley

Absolute Bikes on Route 66 is a Flagstaff institution. The shop has been part of the cycling community for decades, anchoring the east end of the historic downtown corridor.
Flagstaff is a bicycle-friendly city with 117 miles of bike lanes, and Absolute Bikes has been at the center of that culture.
Lyle Motley describes himself as "completely obsessed with smearing paint on things." A painter, tinkerer, musician, and sculptor from Colorado, Motley poured 10 to 12 hours a day for six weeks into this mural. The materials alone cost roughly $15,000.
Fifteen years after the mural was completed, someone injected glue under the paint, damaging the surface. Absolute Bikes had it restored, a testament to how much the community values the work. Look for the wistful child in the composition.
