Bright Side Alley

Multiple artists

18 N. San Francisco St
Bright Side Alley by Jetsonorama, Black Sheep Collective, Cory Begay, others, a mural in Historic Downtown Flagstaff

The History

San Francisco Street is Flagstaff's main commercial corridor, running north from the railroad tracks through the heart of downtown. The alley at number 18 is easy to miss if you are not looking for it.

Bright Side Alley has become an unofficial outdoor gallery, with multiple murals packed into a narrow passageway between buildings. It is one of the most concentrated art spaces in the city.

The Art

Five distinct murals share this alley. Dr. Chip Thomas, who works under the name Jetsonorama, contributed Power and Morning Prayer. Thomas is an African-American activist, photographer, and physician who has practiced medicine on the Navajo Reservation for more than 27 years.

Cory Begay, a Dine artist, painted To Bee Iina, which means "with water is Life" in Dine. The piece draws inspiration from the headwaters of the Little Colorado River, Black Mesa, and the Navajo way of life.

The Black Sheep Collective contributed Aspen Machine, exploring the theme of bridging young and old through art. The alley also features a flamingo piece and additional works by local artists. Your guide Jamie will tell you the rest, including the details you can only see up close.
