The Sound of Flight

by Sky Black and Mural Mice

Orpheum Theatre, 35 W. Aspen Ave
The Sound of Flight by Sky Black + Mural Mice, a mural in Historic Downtown Flagstaff

The History

The Orpheum Theatre sits at the heart of downtown Flagstaff on Aspen Avenue. The building has been a fixture of the community for generations, anchoring the block alongside the Weatherford Hotel.

Before the Orpheum, this stretch of Aspen Avenue housed the Majestic Opera House, which collapsed in 1915. The site was rebuilt and eventually became the movie theater that locals know today.

The theatre's massive west-facing wall remained blank for decades, visible from blocks away but unremarkable. That changed when the city's beautification efforts reached the Orpheum.

The Art

Sky Black and the legendary Mural Mice (R.E. Wall and Margaret Dewar) transformed 4,500 square feet of blank wall into a soaring composition of birds in flight. The scale alone is staggering: this may be the largest mural in the state of Arizona.

Look closely and you will find hidden details woven into the composition. Echo the wolf appears among the birds. A woman in a red dress stands partially concealed. A hawk was painted in memory of Thomas Lang, a community member honored through the project.

The mural was funded through community sponsorship, with over 500 individual donors contributing to bring the project to life. Your guide Jamie will tell you the rest, including the details you can only see up close.
