The History

Collins Back Door Cafe on Leroux Street carries its history in its name. During Prohibition, the back door was the entrance. What looked like a cafe from the front operated as a speakeasy from the rear.

The building's brick facade tells a story of its own. Some of the bricks are painted on, a trompe l'oeil detail that blurs the line between the building's real history and its artistic reinterpretation.

The Art

The Piano Room mural transforms the exterior wall into a scene of Victorian-dressed figures gathered around a piano. The artists (Sage, Jill and Dan Drilevich, and Ricco Disefan) leaned into the speakeasy history, creating a composition that feels like a window into the building's past.

The painted fake bricks around the mural are deliberately placed: they blur where the real building ends and the painted world begins. Your guide Jamie will tell you the rest, including the details you can only see up close.
